Community Justice Alternatives (CJA) of Durham Region and Durham Community Mediation Program (DCMP) would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our Mediation Skills Training Programs.  We are proud to be a member of the Ontario Community Mediation Coalition – ensuring quality training for Community Mediators throughout the Province!  Our training counts towards the educational component of Qualified Mediator and Chartered Mediator designations @ADROntario

The following training programs are offered to organizations throughout the year:


Course Description Dates
Community Mediation Skills (Certificate Course) – recognized by Ontario Community Mediation Coalition & Professional Associations for Qualification as Mediators
This is a 21 hour course introducing participants to the transformative mediation model used by community-based conflict resolution organizations. Some of the topics covered include: an introduction to mediation, the unresolved conflict cycle, the role of the mediator, the co-mediation model, techniques for dealing with individuals in conflict, how to create a safe space, understanding personality styles, interpersonal communication skills and creating a memorandum of understanding.Cost: $550 + HSTEarly Bird (E.B.) before March 3, 2017 : $509 + HST

Student rate available for full time students: $390 + HST

Course Description Dates
Advanced Community Mediation Skills (Certificate Course) – recognized by Ontario Community Mediation Coalition & Professional Associations for Qualification as Mediators
This is a 14 hour course building on the training from the Community Mediation Skills Training Certificate Course. The focus is on an advanced use of communication and interpersonal skills including reframing, paraphrasing and summarizing with in-depth discussions on power, control and culture in mediation.

Pre-requisite: Mediation Skills Training Certificate Course or equivalent (Contact office for more information).

Cost: $450 + HST

Early Bird (E.B.) : $424 + HST

Course Description Dates
Restorative Justice Mediation Skills (Certificate Course)

This is a 21 hour course. Participants are exposed to a comprehensive survey of restorative justice. Assumptions regarding crime are explored via paradigms of retributive and restorative justice. It highlights current intervention strategies and critical justice issues facing community agencies and public institutions. The role of the victim, offender, mediator, and community are examined to discern retributive/restorative positioning and outcome effectiveness.

Workshop Outcomes
It is expected that at the end of the seminar participants will be able to

  • Demonstrate an understanding of restorative justice concepts, principles.
  • Work restoratively by recognizing the traumatic impact of crime on victims, communities and offenders.
  • Identify connections to and referrals from the Criminal Justice System by applying assessment criteria and procedures for determining appropriateness for restorative mediation.
  • Identify several practical strategies for developing active partnerships within the community by managing and facilitating victim offender mediation.
  • Identify core principals of the Youth Criminal Justice Act as they relate to Restorative Justice and as other possible interventions.

Victim Offender Facilitated Dialogue (Certificate Course)

This 21 hour sought after training begins with a focus on the history and philosophy of restorative justice as an alternative to the current criminal justice system.  Victim offender dialogue processes are explored and practiced through role-play with an emphasis on victim offender facilitated dialogue.
